The Health and Safety Specialist implements the Health and Safety policies, ensures healthy and safety conditions in the Dimension Data work environment to prevent harm, injury and illness. They collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to institute control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.

The primary responsibility of the Health and Safety Specialist is to analyse and design control for the prevention of occupational diseases and incident management.

What you’ll be doing

Identify hazards
They identify hazardous conditions that affect workers, property, the environment and the general public. These individuals conduct surveys in the workplace to test equipment, pollutants, potential accident and health hazards, and observe workers and equipment. Once they have determined these hazards, they shift their focus on ways to eliminate it.

Investigate incidents
The Health and Safety Specialist investigates incidents and/or accidents and obtains evidence regarding these incidents and/or accidents as and when required. They gather information during site visits regarding the cause of incidents and/or accidents and prepare the required response to deal with the incident and/or accident. In these cases they survey the working conditions, determine the causes, and recommend action that will prevent further incidents or accidents. At times, they may be required to assist with the rehabilitation of workers affected by the incident or accident.

Compliance and risk
Health and Safety Specialists have a good understanding of and ensure adherence to the applicable laws, regulations and other legal regulations to which the business subscribes and provides expert advice and guidance with regard to this. They keep abreast with current and updated Health and Safety Legislation and conduct site visits, inspecting and evaluating the workplace environment, equipment and practices to ensure compliance to government regulations and safety standards.

They maintain best practice with regards to industry and trade associations, obtain guidance from regulatory bodies. They understand Risk Management methods by performing hazard identification by evaluating appropriate hazards and risk control (HIRA), as well as conducting risk assessments to mitigate organisational liability.

They are also responsible for site visits and conducting assessment audits on clients performing first party internal audits to ensure effectiveness and compliance.

Training
The Health and Safety Specialist provides new employee health and safety orientation. They develop the materials for these presentations and where applicable acquire details on new methodologies and products available to ensure the information is relevant and up to date. These individuals conduct safety training and education programs with existing employees, including demonstrating the use of safety equipment. He/she conducts Health and Safety audits in line with the stipulated legislation.

Meetings
They co-ordinate and attend safety committee meetings. They engage with clients and attend on site SHEQ meetings, discussing the application and prevention of health and safety related matters. He/she may be required to provide evidence at internal disciplinary hearings and/or court hearings.

Emergency procedures
The Health and Safety Specialist collaborates with external stakeholders, including the local authorities, communities, hospitals and disaster management groups to develop maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures.

Behavioural Skills
Health and Safety Specialists are experts in their field and display influencing ability and good interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills. They are team players who display planning, organising and problem solving ability. They have good attention to detail and display the ability to collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including clients.

Required Work Experience:
At least 4 – 6 years’ work experience,
At least 3 years’ experience in a relevant field
